Green roofs are becoming the ‘in’ way to conserve water and energy. Some advantages of green roofs:
- Soil & vegetation absorb heat during the day, keeping the building cooler. Daytime heat is retained after sunset, keeping the building warmer at night. This helps to conserve energy.
- Water runoff is greatly reduced.
- Protect the roofing system from climate extremes and physical abuse, typically doubling the life of the underlying roof.
- Cool and humidify the surrounding air. This creates a micro-climate with beneficial effects in the immediate area.
- Natural habit for animals. Helps encourage birds, butterflies and beneficial insects to remain in the area.
- Helps filter out dust and smog particles. Contaminants are absorbed out of the air and rainfall and kept in the soil.
- Reduced noise levels inside the building.

Although you may not be ready to convert your house into a green roof, you can start small and choose to green roof a birdhouse, dog house, shed or garage.
We also carry bird houses and bird feeders that can be planted with a green roof.
